DH News Service Bangalore: |
| |
| Embassy International Riding School, Bangalore, will host the Junior National Equestrian Championship from December 15 to 30 at the Embassy grounds in Tarunhunse.
Speaking at the press meet M M Venkatachalam, president South India Equestrian Association said, “The championship will help develop equestrian in South India. We have decided to host the championship solely with the aim of developing the sport at the grassroots level in this part of the country.”
Around 200 horses from all over the country have entered the championship. Bangalore’s Confident Group rider Ranvir Nanda is the defending National junior equestrian champion.
The south India equestrian championship and the Championship Show jumping International Young Rider (CSI ‘Y’) will also be held alongside the National Championship. In the CSI ‘Y’ show jumping, teams from six countries — India, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Russia and Iran — will vie for top honors.
In the Junior National Equestrian Championship, events will be held in dressage, show jumping, one-day event and tent pegging in four different age groups viz — Young Riders (16-21 years), Junior Riders (14-18), Children I Riders (12-14) and Children II Rider (10-12). Novice jumping and medium grade jumping for above 12 years and CSI ‘Y’ show jumping for international riders between the age of 16-21 will also be held in the two-week long competition.

Talented rider makes speedy progress
Josey Samuel ,Deccan Herald
Seventeen years have passed since Ranvir Nanda had stepped into the Amateur Riding Club of Mumbai as a five-year-old boy. And this year he had grown from a mere rider to a medal hope. The reigning national junior show jumping champion from Karnataka had a decent outing in the World Jumping Challenge and National Equestrian Championship held at the Agram Grounds in Bangalore.
The 22-year-old on his favorite Royal Flame gelding showed good riding skills and technique in the debut year as a senior pro. “Until last year, I used to ride with seniors as a junior rider. But now things have changed after becoming the junior champion.
“I am counted among medal contenders and its a privilege. If me and the Royal Flame continue the form of this year then I could have finished among top three in the World Jumping Challenge, “ said Ranvir, who bagged the best national junior rider award in 2005.
Ranvir finished among the top ten but not within his aim of a first three finish. “The championship was tough as there is not much between the riders to differentiate. I hoped of a medal, but it all depend how the horse fares on the day. One refusal from horse and you can forget the medal. It’s the harmony between the rider and animal that decide the medal.
“Unfortunately my horse was not in full harmony with me this time,” said the bronze medalists at the CSI ‘Y’ International meet held in Kolkata in 2003.

Talent
The Mumbai born Ranvir, who later shifted to Bangalore in 1994, took to equestrian because of his love for horses. He studied the basic riding skills from ARC, Mumbai. But his talent came to light after joining Lawrence School in Ooty in 1998.
“Seeing my interest in horses, my mother took me to ARC, Mumbai where I studied the basic skills. But the rider in me came to light after joining Lawrence School in Ooty.”
The Confident Group rider detailed about how he adjust with the huge expenses.
“It’s really tough initially to manage as monthly Rs 8000-10,000 is spend per horse for food and other things. I had three horses and each costs Rs 50,000-60,000 when bought and about 7-8 lakhs for a trained horse. Even if we don’t ride, the money spend is the same.”
Support
“At that time my parents helped me a lot.But now Confident Group is sponsoring me, so it’s almost manageable. I am really thankful to the group’s Chairman & Managing Director Mr. Roy C.J. He was the key man to support me when I was running short of money,” said the rider who also owns Mr Ever Green and Shot to Fame apart from Royal Flame.
The Private Pilot License holder from Jakur Government Flying Club is looking to build a career as a pilot only to stretch his equestrian career.
“The expense is becoming more and more everyday. I cannot afford to rely too much on my parents always. It will put too much burden on them. So I have decided to go to Chennai after the championship where I can continue my piloting career and then a job. Earning myself will be helpful to continue as a rider as long as I wish,” he signed off. |
